1. Kabbalat Shabbat @ the Y, THIS FRIDAY, May 16, 7:30 pm
with R’ Sherril Gilbert and Fran Avni

Time:
7:30 pm (Volunteers please arrive by 6:45 pm for set-up.)
Place: Kellert Hall, Snowdon YM-YWHA, 5400 Westbury Avenue (entrance faces the end of St. Kevin St.)

Join us Friday evening for a deeply Renewal, profoundly renewing Shabbat experience as we draw upon the deep wells of Jewish sacred music, poetry, dance and prayer with joy and celebration.

Torah portion: Bechukotai (“By My Rules”) Lev. 26:3-27:34) This week’s wisdom teaching begins with a reminder of our blessings, and a description of what might be called “Heaven”. In this state we notice the miraculous change of the seasons and really taste the fruit of each moment. There is a sense of “enoughness” in whatever we have, and a feeling of ultimate safety, regardless of changing circumstance. In our consciousness of Heaven, we are not ruled by fear. And so we are not overwhelmed by whatever enemy or obstacle we encounter. In this state of consciousness, there is a sense of spaciousness and we are awakened to the possibility of constant grace. And once we fully experience this taste of Heaven, it can become a seed that we carry within us to remind ourselves that the liberation from the slavery of Hell is always possible. To experience more of Rabbi Shefa Gold’s teachings, check out http://www.rabbishefagold.com/Bechukotai.html

After the service: We invite you to join us after the service for a communal dessert-y potluck nosh / Oneg Shabbat (“Shabbat delight”) gathering.
Please bring, as you are able, a healthy sweet, treat or beverage to share. We keep vegetarian! To learn more about food at B’nai Or, please visit the new Food Policy page on our website: https://bnaiormontreal.wordpress.com/food-policy/.

Donations/Membership: If our services and events inspire you, please consider a donation of any amount. You can also join B’nai Or with one annual donation. No one is ever turned away for an inability to pay, and visitors are always welcome. You may pay by cash or by cheque; make cheques out to the YM-YWHA, and clearly mark “Bnai Or Montreal” on the information line. Any cheque donation of $18 and over will receive a tax receipt from the Y. If you’d like to join B’nai Or with your donation for the year, rather than “donate-as-you-go”, a 2014 membership form is attached.

Shabbat at B’nai Or is a deeply Renewal, profoundly renewing experience as we joyfully draw upon the overflowing wells of Jewish sacred music, poetry, dance and prayer. Our Shabbat services are heart-centered, joyful, deeply sweet and warm, upliftingly informal and musical, welcoming, user-friendly and very accessible. We celebrate a Jewish path that is spiritual and beyond denomination, imaginatively combining tradition with innovation and renewal. We respect, honour, and encourage diversity of Jewish expression in our congregational life and activities. And you’ll love our siddur!

About B’nai Or: We welcome you whether or not you have another congregational affiliation, religious training, or experience in Judaism. We are committed to egalitarianism and the inclusion of GLBTQ individuals, interfaith families, people who are exploring Judaism, and people with special needs in all areas of synagogue life. We welcome you without regard to race, gender, ethnicity, religion, socioeconomic status, or age. Let the spirit of being in a vibrant, friendly spiritual community that feels like home warm and open your heart. All are welcome!

Note: We meet on the first and third Fridays of each month, so our next Shabbat service will be on Friday, June 6, 2014.
